TransLink® Project Overview

The ERG Motorola Alliance was awarded the largest smart card contract in United States to design, build, operate and maintain the TransLink® fare payment system in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1999. In March 2001, ERG assumed full responsibility for the implementation of this project. The contract covers all bus, ferry and light, medium and heavy rail transport modes operated by over twenty transit operators and include the provision of point-of-sale devices for retail outlets.
Phase I of the San Francisco TransLink® pilot project, which included the implementation of a central clearinghouse and creation of a customer service centre, was successfully completed in August 2003. Phase II involves a gradual roll-out of the system across all transit operators in the San Francisco Bay Area.
All equipment required to cut-over the first transit operators to smart card travel in Phase II has been installed and revenue ready service is expected to commence in 2007. Design, build and installation activities will then continue throughout 2008, to add the remaining operators to the system as it expands to full capacity, which is expected during 2008/9.
